Differences between CNC machining and manual machining

While CNC machines and manual machines perform the same functions, they are suited for different parts and production scales. Here are the applications of each technology:

Applications of CNC Machining

1.CNC machines are best suited for the following use cases

CNC machines are essential equipment for mass production of parts. For example, thread machining requires a CNC lathe or CNC milling machine, and using any other process such as a manual lathe or manual milling machine will greatly slow down production and is not worth the increased project cost.

In the case of prototyping, manufacturers want the prototype to be similar to the final part so that they can study its characteristics and defects. For this reason, CNC lathes, CNC milling machines, and other CNC equipment are the first choice for prototyping tasks.

For rapid machining applications, CNC machining is more popular than manual lathes or manual milling machines. This is because rapid machining is suitable for very hard metals and alloys, while manual machining is difficult to use due to the poor machinability of the material.

For highly complex parts, manual machines cannot get the job done. Multi-axis CNC lathes and CNC milling machines are the first choice for such projects. For example, complex parts in the military and aerospace industries.

2.Applications for choosing manual machining

Small projects are better suited to using manual milling machines, manual lathes, and other manually operated equipment. This is because for small projects, the project cost is not enough to make up for the initial investment in a CNC machine.

For a smaller number of parts (e.g. 1 to 10), manual machines are a better choice because there is not enough profit to hire a programming team and create CAD and CAM models of the parts.

For short turnaround times for small batch production, manual machines are preferred because there is no time for additional steps such as programming.

Deciding whether to use CNC machining or manual machining depends mainly on your requirements and production goals. If you only want to produce a one-off product for a custom project, then manual machining may be a better choice. However, for a modest production run or to obtain high-precision parts, CNC machining is the best choice.

All of these options do not require high costs for the equipment itself, but rather provide you with high-quality, high-precision components without the corresponding additional costs.
